My work focuses on the concept of phenomenology and encapsulates my sensory experiences of an area of Cardiff Bay that overlooks the Penarth barrage. This location brings together the land, sea and sky and has given me the opportunity to capture the affect that weather and light have on this place. I chose to paint in one location, placing myself in exactly the same spot so that the only variables would depend on weather.
I wanted to carry on in the tradition of painting oil sketches out of doors. J.M.Whistler and John Constable have been integral to the development of my work for their exploration of painting en plein air and oil sketches.
“Without disregarding the art of the past, Constable was at the forefront in developing a new understanding of landscape painting, in which direct observation took precedence over convention and the particularities of time and place acquired the significance formerly given to historical and literary associations.”p11, Constable, 2010, Jonathan Clarkson
